Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative Launches Groundbreaking Project to Combat Gender-Based Violence in Kwara State

The Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI) is proud to announce the launch of its latest project, which aims to prevent gender-based violence (GBV) in Kwara State. This initiative is for dialogues with influential traditional leaders to mobilize them as champions for the prevention of gender-based violence in Kwara State, North Central Nigeria.

The primary goals of this project are to:

  • Engage influential traditional leaders to challenge harmful gender norms and promote gender equality.
  • Increase community awareness and understanding of GBV impacts, prevention, and support.
  • Build sustainable networks among traditional leaders, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders for ongoing GBV prevention and response.

Traditional leaders are the custodians of cultural norms and have immense influence within their communities. Their positions as key opinion leaders enable them to mobilise their communities and drive significant social change. By engaging and mobilising these leaders as champions, they can use their authority to challenge harmful gender norms, promote positive behaviours, and foster a supportive environment for women and girls. The deep-rooted respect and trust that community members have in traditional leaders make their endorsement and active participation crucial in the fight against GBV.

Recent data from our mapping reveals that GBV is a persistent and alarming issue in Kwara State, with 44% of the population reporting that spousal beating and battering are common practices and 31% acknowledging the prevalence of child marriage, particularly in Kwara North. These troubling insights highlight the deep-rooted cultural norms that perpetuate gender inequality and violence against women. Additionally, common proverbs and sayings in the state demean women, reinforcing harmful stereotypes and discriminatory practices.

Through this project, BBYDI anticipates:

  • Increased advocacy and proactive engagement from traditional leaders in challenging harmful gender norms and promoting gender equality.
  • Enhanced community awareness and support for GBV survivors, leading to proactive prevention measures.
  • Establishment of sustainable networks and collaborations among various stakeholders, fostering ongoing dialogue, learning, and collective action on GBV prevention and response.

This project is supported by Ford Foundation, which is committed to preventing and addressing GBV in Nigeria, including Kwara State. Their collaboration and support will be instrumental in achieving the project’s objectives and creating lasting change.

The Executive Director of BBYDI, Barrister NurahJimoh, added, “The involvement of traditional leaders in combating pervasive issue is crucial. Their influence can reshape norms and foster environments where women and girls feel safe and respected,”

We urge all community members to support this initiative and join us in our efforts to prevent gender-based violence. With their support and help, we can make Kwara State a safer and more equitable place for everyone
